For the use of batteries in second-life applications, knowledge of the ageing condition is essential. Against this back-ground, an automated methodology for determining the state of health is presented and implemented on a test bench. Full- cycle measurements are chosen as the characterization method based on python software routines. An additional evaluation method for the measurement results is presented which bases on a graphical depiction using MATLAB(r), where the need of a MATLAB(r)-license on the utilized device for the evaluation is eliminated by using a stand-alone-application combined with a second python-program. The test setup, including the software routines and the device under test, is described in detail in the paper as well as the evaluation of the measurement results. In addition, glimpse into the potential application of this method for constructing stationary energy storage systems utilizing retired electric vehicle batteries will be provided, along with valuable enhancements for refining the characterization process.
