Several control methods are available for the Active Neutral Point Clamped (ANPC) converter, with the objective of achieving a more balanced distribution of power loss across all switches. This paper evaluates a control method which uses both current paths in zero state and intermediate pulses for removing remaining charge carriers due to zero voltage switching. Measurements of switching losses of an existing ANPC phase leg in the MW range where taken into account. Static parameters were taken from the datasheet. The new modulation scheme is compared to the PWM-1 method regarding thermal behavior of all switches in the ANPC converter using MATLAB. Low modulation depths, power factors close to zero and high currents were shown as advantageous due to reducing and distributing the losses of the inner switches.
