Modern electric vehicles rely on on-board chargers (OBC) to provide fast and efficient charging when connected to the grid. Classical OBC implementations use a dual-stage conversion featuring a PFC rectifier plus a dc-dc converter. Whereas effective, this implementation significantly affects power density, which is a key aim for automotive converters. In this context, this paper proposes a 22-kW bidirectional single-stage direct-ac-ac power conversion OBC. The proposed converter features a single-stage im-plementation with direct ac-ac power conversion, achieving higher power density due to the reduction in power, magnetic and capacitive components. The proposed converter has been experimentally verified by means of a 22-kW prototype, proving the feasibility of this proposal.
