In the majority of power electronic systems, volume and weight are important design priorities, which can have a significant impact on other factors such as component costs. Magnetic components tend to be among the bulkiest and heaviest components in power electronics applications. Due to the high voltages and powers in medium voltage (MV) systems as well as in uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, the magnetic components used there are usually voluminous. Coupled inductors offer a good option for improving the design in this respect. In this paper, two coupled inductor designs for weight and volume reduction in MV systems are presented.
