This paper presents the impact of the carbon footprint in the design of a bridgeless totem-pole PFC converter present in a two-stage on-board charge. The conventional design of the PFC is compared with an active filter solution operating as a pulsating power absorber proposed to reduce the volume of the bulk capacitors necessary in the converter. The carbon footprints of these two designs are evaluated for an application up to 7kW. The evaluation of different capacitor technologies and the efficiency comparison gives an idea about the environmental impact of the active filter solution and the guidelines to improve the future designs for on-board chargers.
