The paper presents the investigation of 3 levels traction inverter based on wide band gap semiconductors for 800V electric drive. Compared to other converters, the traction inverter operates constantly over an ultra wide range of voltage, current, fundamental frequency and phase shift (speed and torque of the electrical machine). Classical enunciated selection criteria for 3 level topology such as switch count are not pertinent. Price, component stress and thermal management over the driving cycles of the electrical vehicle demonstrate superiority of ANPC.
