Mechanical and thermal stresses of EV drive system components strongly depend on how the drive is operated during it’s lifetime. In On-Demand drives, expected operation is difficult to quantify as it depends on vehicle design, powertrain design and torque distribution strategy. This paper proposes two methods for generating representative On-Demand drive Load Profiles based on vehicle speed profiles. Additionally, a compact drive system model for efficient simulation of traction inverter thermal stress is derived and explained in detail. The inverter thermal stress is simulated for a measured On-Demand speed/torque profile and is compared to simulation results based on the two proposed methods. The results show good match between measured and generated drive loading profiles.
