This paper addresses the need for cost-effective efficiency enhancement in AC to DC conversion, with a focus on industrial variable frequency drive systems. An examination of diverse AC-DC converter topologies and power semiconductor options is conducted. Switching losses of the various device combinations are measured in a double pulse test. With the use of simulation models semiconductor losses are analyzed. Thereby the die area of the converters is optimized and the converter efficiency is determined. The study encompasses the B6 converter, T-Type converter, and a Vienna rectifier. The investigation reveals that efficiency over the full load cycle can be drastically improved compared to the reference converter without increased semiconductor cost.
