First, we present the device design and experimental electrical performance of our new generation (Gen3) 4.5 kV Asymmetric Integrated Gate Commutated Thyristor (AS-IGCT) and Fast Recovery Diode (FRD), which are optimized for medium-voltage high-power applications. Afterwards, we present the performance improvements such as power level, current control margin (dynamic overloadability), and efficiency using the Gen3 IGCT and FRD product-set compared to previous generation of IGCT and FRD for railway power supply applications. The performance evaluation is done using 3 level-neutral point clamped (3L-NPC) topology simulations both in inverter and rectifier operation modes on power electronic building block (PEBB) level.
