The effectiveness of the fast-response time of a DC Solid-State Circuit Breaker (SSCB) over the incumbent solutions, specifically fuses and contactors, is discussed and demonstrated in this paper. Experimental lab measurements followed by simulation models are discussed to show how a solid-state solution improves the safety and reliability of a high-voltage DC distribution system. Specifically, a comparison of a solid-state solution based on Silicon Carbide (SiC) against a DC fuse shows the dramatic decrease in let-through current and energy as well as reduction in arcing and risk of arc-flash.
