The automotive industry is undergoing a transformative shift towards electric and hybrid propulsion sys-tems to meet stringent emissions regulations and enhance overall vehicle efficiency. Three-level invert-ers have emerged as a crucial component in these electrified drivetrains, offering advantages such as reduced harmonic distortion, improved system efficiency, and enhanced control capabilities. Three-level inverters offer distinct advantages over traditional two-level inverters in terms of reducing switching losses and harmonic distortion. While three-level topologies offer significant advantages for electric vehicles, for a holistic comparison it's important to investigate their implementation with regards to system costs and complexity compared to traditional two-level inverters. This paper will focus on the solution which can use the best of both 2-level and 3-level topologies with a single power module to enhance the system efficiency while avoiding the higher cost of materials and implementation.
