This paper presents a comprehensive concept for a holistic energy management of domestic appliances to stabilize the energy supply in the context of the energy transition. A holistic energy management system (EMS) includes the entire value chain from the grid operator to the end devices. First, the general structure of energy systems and laws and regulations in Germany relevant to the energy grid are presented. Then, approaches for future energy systems are given. This is basic information for a scenario analysis for developing the basis for the system design. Then, a concept design was performed using methods of the Model-Based-Systems-Engineering. The result is a concept of an EMS that is based on a cloud infrastructure with an integration of external data (e.g. weather). Moreover, the system does not require integration of external hardware on the grid, in the houses or on the devices. Finally, a prototype implementation of the EMS is carried out using a use case of intelligent control of refrigerators. It can be shown that the energy costs are reduced by 12 % compared to conventional operations.
