In this paper, a strategy to optimize wind converters is discussed using dedicated power modules for the line-side (FF2000XTR17IE5) and machine-side (FF1700XTR17IE5D) of back-to-back wind converters. The application related operating conditions for both sides were investigated, leading to the designing of optimized machine-side and line-side PrimePACK(TM) power modules. Evaluation of the benefit of using two dedicated modules was verified using simulation for a general reference system. Finally, the system benefit of such an optimized approach is illustrated through an actual wind converter example.
