High power modules are essential semiconductor components to enable global transition towards clean energy. Given its primary function to transport high power, the physical design of the power module needs to be nothing short of perfection. This paper discusses an electrical modelling-based design approach using a combination of 3D design, finite element analysis, circuit analysis and system simulations software aided engineering tools. This approach enables shorter design cycles, multi-factorial design of experiments and reduces probability of costly redesigns. This paper focuses on IGBT and Silicon Carbide (SiC) power modules in vehicle electrification for traction inverters.
