Shunt active power filters (SAPFs) are installed in industrial power systems in parallel to the loads with the aim to mitigate harmonic distortion. In particular, this paper contrasts and critically compares the different control strategies that exist to command a SAPF in an industrial power system. Namely, the voltage-based and the current-based control strategies. Actually, previous work dealt exclusively with the load current detection method and analyzed only the SAPF harmonics mitigation effectiveness on the supply currents. Therefore, the effectiveness of each of the control strategies to perform harmonic voltage mitigation at the point of common coupling (PCC) was not studied in the past. On this basis, this work comes to expand previous studies by analyzing the SAPF harmonics mitigation effectiveness on the harmonic voltages at the PCC and it is performed for the three SAPF´s control strategies. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of each control strategy are highlighted in this paper.
