Research on isothermal fatigue behaviors and mechanism of Mg-12Gd- 3Y-0.5Zr magnesium alloy at different temperatures

Isothermal fatigue tests were carried out on Mg-12Gd-3Y-0.5Zr magnesium alloy at room temperature and high temperatures. The experimental results indicates that fatigue strength of Mg-12Gd-3Y-0.5Zr magnesium alloy decrease not apparently with increasing temperature up to 200 °C, but drop sharply at 235 °C which is due to newly activated slip system. The fatigue mechanism of Mg-12Gd-3Y-0.5Zr magnesium alloy was analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The factor of temperature variation which lead to cyclic slip and oxidation is main fatigue failure mechanism.
