Optimal control theory is a major branch of modern control theory which concentrates on finding the fundamental conditions and comprehensive methods to optimize the performance index of a control system. Due to the universality of optimal control theory and the substantial development of computing power, the theory developed rapidly. In recent years, optimal control theory has appeared to be applied to the medical field. In this paper presented here, we analyse the achievements of optimal control theory in the field of clinical science by evaluating the advantages and drawbacks of three main applications, then we summarize the development trends of the theory in the medical field. At present, there are relatively few applications of optimal control theory in the field of clinical science in China. This paper should provide some theoretical references for researchers when tackling with clinical conditions that limit human mobility.
