Grid-tied AC DC Converters and Protection in the DC Grid

The interface between the AC grid and DC grid has a number of requirements. Not only should there be a transfer of energy, but also this power flow has to be controllable bidirectional. Additionally and also of importance is the protection of the DC grid. This implies a number of design constraints, that a simple three phase rectifier cannot fulfill. Because of grounding in the AC grid, precautions have to be taken in the DC grid, not to have fault currents destroying the interface between the AC and DC grid.
