Today, the automotive market is undergoing an unprecedented revolution, strongly investing in Car Electrification for a more sustainable and greener future. This new megatrend will dominate the Power Semiconductor market for the coming decades as car manufacturers continuously aim to improve performance and energy efficiency. Due to its intrinsic features, GaN technology is especially suitable for automotive power conversion applications where high frequency, high power and high efficiency are needed to address car electrification requirements. This article describes ST's disruptive STi²GaN technology, an integrated solution based on e-Mode p-GaN gate HEMT that leads to powerful, compact, and lightweight electronic modules. It will demonstrate how the STi2GaN solution enables hard switching topologies where high voltage and high frequency can coexist with system efficiency higher than 98%.
