This paper presents the investigation of the operation principles of a high-power inverting buck-boost converter used as pulsed power capacitor charger. The objective is to show that in certain high-voltage applications the Boundary Conduction Mode (BCM) is the most suitable operation principle. This hypothesis is supported by an investigation of a laboratory setup (305 kW) for output voltages of up to 3.3 kV. The presented system achieves a power density of 4.07 kW/dm3 with efficiencies of more than 82%.
