In this paper, a new method of packaging failure detection based on magnetic field measurements is evaluated. Based on pre-emptive simulations, a valid area for a magneto resistive (MR) sensor placement is chosen. Next, two different sensor layout patterns are compared to each other. Based on the results, one of them is chosen and implemented into an advanced PCB to observe the magnetic field over all three DCBs inside a six-pack module consisting of three half bridges. Measurements are conducted while gradually and intentionally removing wire bonds from the middle DCB, to show the measurement boards capability to detect wire bond defects and current sharing among the remaining bond wires.
