The magnetic bearing is a novel type, high performance bearing, which suspend the rotor by magnetic force without any mechanic contact between rotor and stator. It has a very broad application prospect in the fields of aerospace, mechanical industry, life science and etc. This paper discusses two types of magnetic bearing—high temperature superconductor magnetic bearing (HTSMB) and power magnetic bearing (SMB) separately, starting from the development status of magnetic bearing, then summarizes the principle and technical characteristics. This paper analyzes the problems and at the same time prospects the future development direction.
