Coexistence between human-type and machine-type communications is essential in future cellular networks. The former demands high data rates whereas long battery lifetimes are crucial for the latter. In this paper, we consider a setup where clusters of sensors and a set of user terminals (UTs) are served by a multiple-antenna base station (BS) that transfers power and data accordingly. Depending on the type of UT communication, half or full-duplex, data and energy are transmitted through the same signals (i.e., simultaneous wireless information and power transfer) or through separate signals, respectively. In addition, sensors also harvest energy from the signals transmitted by UTs and other active sensors. Thanks to the BS multi-antenna technology, block diagonalization is used to eliminate all the interference in the downlink. Based on that, in this paper we design transmission schemes that maximize the throughput for the UTs while guaranteeing a sufficient and fair amount of received power among all sensors in the network.
