This paper presents different aspects of static frequency converters for railway power supplies: As an introduction, an overview of specific requirements is given. A 3-level converter based on IGCT technology that was introduced 20 years ago is presented, and corresponding operating experiences are shown. Besides that, also a newly introduced converter based on MMC topology with IGCT semiconductors is presented, together with measurement results from a real converter.
