Additive manufacturing is one of the big goals in optics fabrication since it provides a maximum freedom of design, opens the possibility of highly individualized optical components, and allows a simple integration of further functionalities. In this paper, a new approach to additively manufacture macroscopic 3D-optics using inkjet-printing technology is described. By focussing on a proper material formulation and printing highly transparent hybrid organic/inorganic polymers layer-by-layer optics with high thermal, chemical and mechanical stability are generated. Specific challenges for optics, like minimizing layer-to-layer interface effects for creating a close to bulk 3D structure as well as shape and roughness requirements are discussed.
