This paper proposes a single-stage ac-dc cascaded multilevel topology with bidirectional characteristic. The structure is an arrangement of full-bridge converters based on the three-state switching cell (3SSC) which provides insulation through a medium frequency transformer (MFT). Power flow is controlled by the phase-shift angle between the primary voltage and secondary voltage across the MFT. The basic description of the topology and simulation results are presented, as well as an estimation of losses regarding the semiconductor elements in a comparative study with other topologies applied in traction transportation.
