There is a growing need to understand the quantifiable relationship between setting up and how much non-conventional rural electrification technology would be 'right' for a particular power network. Using the cost reductive non-conventional capacitive coupling sub-station (CCS) coupled with Single Wire Earth Return (SWER) technology for rural electrification, introduces a mismatch in the reactive power supplied, which in turn affects the system voltage profile. Therefore, optimal penetration levels of these technologies need to be determined. This paper reviews and discusses the adoptability and implication of non-conventional rural electrification technologies on electricity distribution system planning in Kenya's Electricity Supply Industry (KESI).
