Those of us who depend on batteries often feel that we are flying blind. Some of us use instruments to help navigate the question: "what condition are our batteries in?" Yet, most of us want something simpler to use - something more definitive - less ambiguous - more useful. When you first read through literature that has been written over the last decade and a half on the subject of battery test and validation, you cannot help but wonder why we have not yet identified a simple yet effective way to have reasonable visibility into the condition of our batteries. This paper describes technical background and components of a simplified battery validation system that has been field proven in UPS applications over the last 8 years. Results and findings from high reliability applications in banking and air traffic control - each depending on strings of 3,000 blocks, are used as illustration.
