Emerging 3G wireless networks are providing high bandwidth connectivity to the mobile user. For an efficient and economic operation especially with regard to the broadcast of rich multimedia content a new Hybrid Multimedia Broadcasting Architecture (HMBA) based on DVB-H and the 3GPP IMS is proposed and described in this paper. The HMBA establishes a platform for the distribution of multimedia content to mobile users via 3G wireless networks or via DVB-H based on its popularity. With the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) as the co-ordiantion platform the HMBA integrates natively into current 3G and 3Gb based systems. The main intention of the HMBA is to combine the advantages of DVB in distributing content to many users while using 3GPP UMTS for secure, accountable and personalized transfers.
