Inhalt:
Traditionally, streaming data has been transmitted in presentation order, but more modern priority based algorithms change the transmission order to reflect the relative importance of different parts of the video stream for the perceived quality. Simulation results indicate that priority based scheduling (PBS) leads to a better video quality than earliest deadline first (EDF) scheduling, but up to now a detailed analysis of PBS is missing, and the results have not been generalised. This paper will derive an analytical model, and apply it to different link scenarios like link outage and insufficient bandwidth. It will be shown that PBS has advantages in scenarios where packet loss is inevitable, but EDF performs better in other cases. Furthermore, this model can be used to gain insight into the behaviour of PBS, and used to optimise its performance.
