With the new climate regulations concerning sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) of the European Union, the demand to substitute SF6 as an insulating gas for high voltage switchgear is rising. In this paper, the lightning impulse breakdown voltage values of a carbon dioxide (CO2) mixture with oxygen (O2) with different pressures are analysed. Sphere electrodes are used at different distances. The results are displayed according to Paschens law according to the product of pressure and distance. Following, some conclusions to the electron generation processes at high pressures and the confidence of meas-urements are drawn. The breakdown voltage values should be used as part of a data bank and can be used for design rules in switchgear applications.
