To combat chromatic dispersion in short reach direct detection, we improve on traditional linear filters minimizing mean square error. We demonstrate experimentally a convolutional neural network at equal complexity reducing required SNR by over 1 dB, and by 2 dB combined with unequally spaced PAM4 levels.
