In order to reveal the process of rod-rod gap discharge under the operation shock voltage, the positive polarity rod-rod discharge test was carried out at the gap scale of 4.77m and the simultaneous observation of the discharge multi-parameter was performed. Based on the observation results, the development process of positive polarity rod-rod gap discharge and the parameters of discharge current and electric field were analysed. In the positive polarity rod-rod gap breakdown pro-cess, the positive downward leader plays a dominant role and the upward leader shows intermittent development. The radiated HF/VLF electric field is distributed in the range of 10 to 60 MHz, and its duration is influenced by the polarity of the applied voltage and whether the wind turbine is rotating. The experimental observation study reveals the develop-ment process of rod-rod gap discharge, which can provide a reference for the study of the physical process of rod-rod gap discharge.
