Impact of Using Underbuilt Wire on Overhead Transmission Lines Considering Physically Consistent Line Parameters

This study aims to assess the impact of using two different formulations to calculate transmission line parameters on the backflashover phenomenon in the insulator string. The parameter calculation formulations vary in physical consistency: one is based on the Carson approach, while the other follows the Petterson approach. Additionally, the analysis considered implementing the underbuilt wire protection technique in the transmission line. The results indicate that the Petterson model provides greater accuracy, particularly in scenarios involving backflashover in the insulator string. In situations without backflashover, the discrepancies between the results of the two models are insignificant. However, in backflashover, the Petterson model proves critical, resulting in lower current values. This precision is crucial for appropriately selecting the dimensions of the underbuilt wire.
