When a lightning accident occurs on an overhead power transmission line (OPTL), it is necessary to analyse the cause of the accident to provide the effective protection measures. Therefore, attempts have been made to estimate the cause of lightning accidents from surges on the OPTLs. The source of lightning surges is either direct or indirect strokes. In this paper, we analysed lightning surge waveforms caused by direct or indirect strokes using the Virtual Surge Test Lab. Restructured and Extended Version (VSTL REV) where the fields are calculated by the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method is applied and compared with observed waveforms.
