Recent advances in SAR sensors and innovative imaging techniques lead to a large amount of acquired SAR raw data and necessitate efficient compression methods. JPEG2000 is a popular, versatile and efficient image compression standard, which has significantly impacted the storage and transmission of visual data in the realm of image processing and multimedia. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of employing JPEG2000 for SAR raw data compression. The preliminary results demonstrate that JPEG2000 outperforms the state-of-the-art Block-Adaptive Quantization (BAQ) method in terms of achievable quality, and prove its effectiveness for efficient data volume reduction for next-generation SAR systems.
