Micro cables were first introduced in the market more than 20 years ago and have evolved over time, becoming smaller and lighter weight. The main features such as low weight, small diameter and high fiber density make them ideal for installation by air blowing into modern duct systems. Increasing global demand for high-speed network access has caused displacement of some conventional outside plant cables by micro cables which require less space and smaller ducts. The demand for maximum utilization of existing duct systems drives a further increase in fiber density in these cables. It requires development of low diameter fibers that can be used in increasingly more dense cable conditions. So far, 8/10mm (ID/OD) micro duct could accommodate 144f cable, while 10/12mm could 216f cable. With new 190-micron fibers and re-designed cables ducts can accommodate 192f and 288f respectively. The 190-micron fiber used in these micro cables combines lower attenuation with improved bend performance that is fully compliant with international standards, such as ITU-T G.652D and G.657.A2 recommendation. This fiber also provides greater MFD compatibility with legacy single mode fibers (9.2 +/- 0.4 µm).
