Magnetic quantum sensing based on NV center in diamonds promises major improvements over classical measurement techniques. In this paper, we apply magnetic quantum sensing to the existing industrial application of linear position detection. Magnetic linear sensors based on Hall, AMR or GMR effect are widely used for position measurement due to their high robustness, low total cost and high technological maturity. Our quantum approach raises some challenges: Understanding the fundamentals of magnetic quantum sensing – especially the magneto-optic detection technique, designing a sensor element and evaluation electronics, and building a frontend with the existing discrete micro-assembly equipment. A demonstrator based on quantum sensing was designed, built and tested in an application-orientated set-up.
