In order to reduce dynamic power peaks of drive systems in a production plant, an energy storage system is developed and used in combination with a controlled active infeed converter. The approach is investigated at a model plant on a DC grid with CNC woodworking machines and robots. The energy storage system consists of a DC-DC converter and a capacitor module. The control concept used is a characteristic control system that does not require communication or a superimposed control system. The information about the current power state in the DC grid is given by the network voltage that can be measured at each device. Parallel operation of power infeed and energy storage system without communication is confirmed. Using developed characteristic voltage curves and the fast control system in the energy storage system reduces the maximum power infeed from the AC grid by 30%. This realizes a peak shaving to reduce the power peaks.
