Robotic machining is an emerging technology when it comes to machining large components. Machining robots can be a more cost-effective solution for such work pieces in comparison to standard machine tools. For machining of CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastics), a novel cutting tool was developed and tested on the Accurate Robotic Milling System (ARMS) at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC). The application was hole generation via orbital milling on CFRP stack coupons. A digital twin was used to simulate and develop the milling process with the novel tool. Cutting forces and acceleration signals were recorded during machining to enable assessment of the performance of the novel cutting tool.
