Technology Trends in Switched Mode Power Conversion

The article reflects the past four decades’ evolution of Switched Mode Power Conversion Technology (SMPCT) until the status quo and gives an outlook on the future technology directions to further increase the key performance requirements for higher efficiency and power density as well as weight at reduced costs. The key drivers for the technology evolution are outlined and the obstacles with special focus on magnetics are explained along with solution proposals focusing on low voltage applications in information technology and new emerging markets like electromobility.
