Networking road users is one way of improving road safety by exchanging information on the traffic situation. Vulnerable road users are part of the traffic volume and must be integrated into the network as part of Vehicle-to-Pedestrian communication. Vehicles use specific transmission technologies, such as ITS-G5, to communicate with each other in the frequency range of 5.9 GHz. The mobile devices of vulnerable road users do not support this frequency range. Different approaches must therefore be found for V2P communication. In this study, we will compare two approaches to integrating vulnerable participants. One method relies on gateways, while the other uses the LTE-V2X technology in the general LTE frequency bands. The use of LTE-V2X shows significantly lower delays for timecritical applications for collision avoidance between vehicles and vulnerable road users.
