In this paper, we introduce compressive sensing (CS) to the concept of angle-of-arrival (AoA) estimation with a liquid crystal display (LCD). First, we demonstrate how the LCD based AoA estimation principle can be adapted to employ CS to this class of problem. We then describe the system model and derive the well-known CS equation. Subsequently, we analyze and compare different sensing matrices based on a simple design specification and develop optimization criteria. Finally, we present a hardware demonstrator for the measurement of different sensing matrices and show measurement results.
