In this paper a test method for examining necking on cable insulation made of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) is presented and the measurement results obtained on three different cable insulations are shown and discussed. There is a correlation between the measured depth of impression obtained using a model arrangement and the necking obtained on real arrangements. By interpolating the model arrangement results, depths of impression for any pressures and temperatures can be determined, which enables a robust and efficient design of the cable accessories for XLPE cables in medium and high voltage technology.
