The paper presents a comprehensive approach to observe and control electrical distribution grids. The ongoing integration of renewable energies and the associated increase in power electronic devices require new decentralized approaches for grid automation to ensure safe grid operation. The project AUTOGRID aims at the investigations of an automatic operation of inverter dominated distribution grids based on dynamic system modelling. The project involves different expertise in the field of data acquisition, data distribution and modelling of electrical power grid components, as well as the development of DTs. Diverse investigations of highly dynamic phenomena and the combination with novel communication infrastructures has resulted in a new comprehensive approach of grid automation. The paper shows the concepts of different components of the setup and explains the approaches and implementations of the overall system. Central modules are acquisition and distribution of measured data as well as the modelling as Digital Twins (DT) processed on decentral edge-devices and centralized real-time simulation systems.
