The “Energiewende” poses new challenges for the provision of reactive power in the transmission grid due to the increasing decentralization of power generation in Germany. The operating times of conventional power plants, which provide reactive power to the transmission grid, are continuously decreasing. Hence, new concepts for the provision of reactive power need to be developed. One option is to provide reactive power for transmission grids by distributed energy resources in distribution grids. The first step for evaluating such a concept is the assessment of the potential for providing reactive power by distributed energy resources. Therefore, this paper presents a model to analyze the potential for the provision of reactive power for the overlaying grid, while keeping the operating constraints e.g. voltage limits and power line capacities of the distribution grid. The potential for the provision of reactive power from the distribution to the transmission grid is quantified for an exemplary network with a high penetration of renewable energies.
