This paper investigates form-factor and power-consumption characteristics of optical line terminations (OLT) of nextgeneration optical access systems which are based on wavelength multiplexing. We compare variants with passive and active point-to-point as well as shared and dedicated last-mile access. Since reach capabilities of the systems have to be considered as well, no clear winning solution which fits all areas (urban, rural) can be identified.
