Inhalt:
In applications like automotive infotainment systems, industrial automation, as well as home networking, the step-index polymer optical fibre is used as a robust and low-cost transmission medium for 100 Mbit/s transmission. In order to overcome the limited bandwidth of both the transmitter LED and the fibre, different advanced modulation, equalization, and coding schemes are considered for next generation Gigabit Ethernet systems over SI-POF. As opposed to copper-based or wireless systems, the optical intensity modulated channel with direct detection (IM/DD) is peak-power limited. It is shown that this property has an important impact on the choice of the optimum modulation and coding schemes. An analytical comparison of multilevel pulse-amplitude modulation and discrete multitone is presented.
