System integration and fault tolerance aims to help achieve high levels of availability and power density in aerospace applications. A 50kW integrated machine and drive with fault tolerance is described. For monitoring system health and diagnostics, an array of sensors is embedded. On state voltages and device currents are compared to ensure equal current sharing. By implementation of a power module using surface mount technology and double sided components a modular design is achieved. Key module parameters are constantly measured, through which faults can be detected and the ageing of a module may be quantified. Once a specific module has reached a predetermined age, the module may be removed from operation. The supporting system architecture will allow the remaining system to continue operation, therefore creating a fault tolerant system.
