Partial discharges cause elastic waves in solid dielectric devices e.g. stress cone in an outdoor termination. Together with a prepared high voltage cable end this device forms a multilayered structure. For prediction of wave propagation in mul-tilayered structures it is necessary to know the material properties. Important parameters are the sound velocity (cL) and the attenuation (α L). Values found in the literature were not satisfactory mainly due to insufficient accuracy of measured attenuation. For the materials cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) and liquid silicone rubber (LSR) the parameters (cL and α L) are determined in the temperature range from -20deg C to 50deg C and in the frequency range from 200 kHz to 700 kHz by using a two sample technique. This technique improves the accuracy of the measurement results significantly.
